Module 3: Risk Factors for FASD

Paternal Factors

FASD occurs after the egg has been fertilized. If the father drinks alcohol before the baby is conceived, the sperm will not cause an FASD. Only maternal alcohol use during pregnancy can cause an FASD. The father can play an important role in preventing FASD by helping the mother avoid alcohol during her pregnancy.
