Maternal Metabolism

The mother's metabolism can affect how much a fetus will be damaged by alcohol. For example, age-related increases in maternal body fat-to-water ratio can affect alcohol metabolism. Thus, children of drinking mothers over 30 are more vulnerable to being born with an FASD.1
