Competency 3: Treatment Strategies for Working with Clients with an FASD

Introduction

Family therapy session

The counselor needs to consider different approaches when working with adults, adolescents, and children with an FASD. Adults have been living with an FASD for a long time and face many challenges. Adolescents must cope with the difficulties of FASD, puberty, and alcohol problems. Although few children present with alcohol problems, the addiction professional will undoubtedly encounter children with an FASD when working with women with alcohol problems. Part of the counselor's work will be helping clients whose children have an FASD learn to manage their children's disability while coming to grips with their feelings about drinking while pregnant.
