Competency 2: Identification of FASD and Diagnosis of FAS
Description
This competency presents diagnostic references and criteria for
fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS),
describes disorders related to prenatal alcohol exposure, identifies
signs and symptoms of
fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) that may be confused with
other disorders, describes areas of the brain affected by prenatal alcohol exposure,
reviews diagnostic procedures, and discusses professional values and ethics related
to
diagnosis of FASD.
The
addiction professional needs to be familiar with signs and symptoms
of FASD in order to make appropriate referrals for diagnosis. However, addiction
professionals cannot diagnose these disorders themselves.
